International Travel Medical Coverage
International Travel Medical Coverage
We recommend for our clients to purchase International Travel Medical coverage as most medical plans do not provide any or adequate coverage outside the United States. Â In general Medicare, individual and group plans provide the following for international coverage:
- Medicare only provides coverage outside the United States for the first 8 miles on a cruise ship and if care in Canada is closer than the U.S. while traveling to Alaska.
- Medicare Supplement Plan G and N only provides 80% coverage up to $50,000 and it is subject to limitations.
- Medicare Advantage Plans may say they provide worldwide coverage, but they do not provide resources while out of the country.
- Individual Marketplace Health Plans do not provide coverage outside the United States.
- Group health plans say they provide worldwide coverage but they do not provide resources or coverage tailored for international trips.

MedJet provides a membership program for global medical transport. Medjet has two levels of coverage:
- MedJetAssist
- MedJetHorizon
Medjet is a worldwide air-medical transport program that is available to travelers on a membership basis. Medjet will arrange medical transfer for members who are hospitalized on an inpatient basis more than 150 miles from their home, either domestically or abroad, to the hospital of their choice in their home country.
- This is a pre-paid membership with no monetary limit to the air medical transport benefits.
- Domestic air medical evacuation services normally average $30,000 while international transports can exceed $180,000.
- The membership fee is the only expenditure for complete domestic and international medical transport protection.
- MedJet is not insurance, there are no co-payments, deductibles or claim forms and they don’t ask any health questions for those under the age of 75.
- Home country hospital of choice goes beyond evacuation services typically included in business travel accident policies, travel insurance and corporate health policies.

Domestic vs. International Travel Insurance
It is important to confirm if your health insurance plan provides coverage internationally. Group plans traditionally cover you, and Affordable Care Act individual health plans do not.

Be aware of travel coverage limits with Medicare
While Original Medicare does not provide protection for traveling abroad, Medicare Supplements can provide limited coverage and some Medicare Advantage Plans provide worldwide coverge. It’s vital to check the specifics of your plan before traveling. If you need help, give us a call, we’d be happy to look at your policy and let you know!

International Health Insurance 101
What does this mean to me?
Traditional travel insurance vs. Comprehensive travel health insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance is available for short trips (1 day to 6 months) or as primary insurance for expatriates or someone relocating to another country for an extended period of time (6 months or longer). Depending on the length of the trip and the plan selected by the consumer, the policies can pay for doctor and hospital bills and sometimes even dental care and prescription medications. Added features that go beyond traditional “injury/illness” coverage for long term, expatriate care can include preventive/routine services, acupuncture, chiropractic care, maternity benefits and more.
Another extremely important benefit to consider when purchasing travel health insurance is medical evacuation coverage. Keep in mind that depending on your travel destination, adequate care for your condition may not be available locally. Medical evacuations can come with hefty price tags (at times up to six figures) and are difficult to organize and coordinate. In such stressful situations, it is important to have the reassurance that you will not have to pay for transportation for a life-threatening emergency to a nearby location for excellent medical care or to return home for the best care (available with Xplorer Premier). What’s more, discerning between one air-ambulance company and another (as just one example of the complexities you could face) or having third party medical personnel assess the care you are receiving locally to verify the necessity of a medical evacuation, are the types of decisions which can be left up to the expertise of a travel health insurance provider.
